An actor or actress (see terminology) is a person who acts in a dramatic production and who works in film, television, theatre, or radio in that capacity. The ancient Greek word for an "actor," ὑποκριτής (hypokrites), means literally "one who interprets"; in this sense, an actor is one who interprets a dramatic character. From Wikipedia under the

In this, her First film, she WON a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award (!!!) for her portrayal of... uh... Addie Prey (?). Anyway, check it out ! (You might know her as the little girl / lead in the original Bad News Bears movie.) Answered by Rick A - Thu Nov 22 01:31:22 2007 What is the shortest amount of time an actor can be in a B'way show's cast if they are a child? Q. I presume every actor has a different contract. But I'm a child actress, and I was wondering if I somehow found out about a Broadway audition, how long (at the least) most child actors like myself stay there. With that said, I also would like to know, on average, how many months or weeks the rehearsals would last. Thank you! Asked by GrammarFreak - Wed Jan 3 23:36:34 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Usually all child roles are at least double cast and even triple cast (2-3 kids alternating doing the 8 or so shows a week on Broadway). Staying with a show is mostly dependent on how long the child stays the correct height and can sing the right notes (if its a musical). Once a child gets too tall to play, sa, an 8 year old - or if a young boy or girl has a voice change issue - then they are usually negotiated out of the role - but may take another role in the show. You could rehearse anywhere from 1 month (if you are a new replacement) to 6 months (if you are originating a new role). Answered by step - Sat Jan 6 10:22:57 2007 Why are best actor and best actress different catagories?
Q. I can understand why best actor/actress in a drama is different than best actor/actress in a comedy because the two are very different and hard to gage with proper perspective. But why are the different individual acting awards separated by sex? Shouldn't we just have awards for best thespian in a ___ (insert show type). This isn't like sports where physically, its very difficult to have men and women play together. Acting would seem to be a level field right? Asked by ravipr93 - Fri Jul 17 20:43:59 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is now, but it wasn't traditionally. In certain genres, actresses used to have a completely different job from actors. It's only since characters like Ripley and Lara Croft have come along that women have got to play action leads, for example, and those roles are still pretty rare. I guess the academies and other givers of awards are always going to be behind the trend, but I wouldn't be surprised if eventually there is only one award for best actor, regardless of gender.
