Acting is the work of an actor or actress, which is a person in theatre, television, film, or any other storytelling medium who tells the story by portraying a character and, usually, speaking or singing the written text or play. Most early sources in the West that examine the art of acting (Ancient Greek: hypokrisis) discuss it as part of rhetoric. While there is a set definition for the word "acting", there is no set definition for the phrase "to act". It is thought that the actor is typically supposed to "become the other", where the actor molds his or herself to the character. In all actuality, the actor should mold the character to his or herself based on common interests and goals that the character needs to achieve. This method is commonly taught through Constantin Stanislavski.

Acting. <----?
Q. I want to become an actress. I am 14 years old and acting is my dream. I have some experience, but nothing major. I want to act for any show, especially something in Nickelodeon as a minor character. Can someone please tell me how I do it? Oh yeah, if you are gonna post rude replys, trying to crush my dreams, don't even bother...chances are I'll report you for abuse. Thanks.

A. When I was your age, acting was my biggest passion. But you're still growing and your tastes and interests may change in 5 years. However, if you're really passionate about drama and acting, look for some local acting groups in your area. Is there a drama program at your school? A class? Take as many courses as you can. Actors never stop learning! Most importantly, it's very seldom that people can just go to Hollywood and get their dream acting job overnight. You have to work your way to the top. Keep your head high and you may find yourself working for Nickelodeon! :-D

How do I get started acting in Michigan?
Q. I have taken acting classes in college, acted in many high school plays, and been in a few student films. I want to start getting a more professional acting career/resume together before moving out to LA. How would you suggest I go about g improving my chances in LA right now, while still living in Michigan? Also, I have taken my own headshots (I know it sounds dangerous but I am a professional photographer) and I have written a decent beginner's Acting Resume.

A. There are regional theatre companies in every state. I imagine you'll have to go to a major city like Lansing or Detroit but also places like Grand Rapids or even Battle Creek might have companies that offer ways to work toward an Equity card. After you get into Equity, a lot more resources should become available to you for classes and audition information. Get Daily Variety or one of the other show biz papers so you can see what's out there. If there are any good film locations in Michigan it would be great if you could get yourself there for extra work. Your best bet is to keep watch in these little papers to know what's going on in film or theatre. Some traveling road shows use local people in bit parts and it wouldn't hurt to… [cont.]

What's the difference between an acting coach and mentor?
Q. I'm sure that only people that are very familiar with the acting world would understand this, but what's difference? Can't an acting coach be your mentor? Does a mentor have to be a professional at all? Thanks!

A. Certainly your acting coach can be your mentor. A mentor advises, a coach teaches you things to use as an actor. It certainly does make sense if your mentor has been or is a professional in your area.
